In every profession, there must be a higher standard of practice that professionals strive of achieve. The Catalyst Coaching program I am enrolled in is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), which means that I will be part of a global network of coaches upheld by the ICF code of ethics. I truly identify with the core values listed in the ICF website:
- Integrity – upholding the highest standards for the coaching profession
- Excellence – setting and demonstrating excellence in coaching quality, qualification and competence
- Collaboration – valuing community building and social connections that occur through collaborative partnerships
- Respect – putting people first, valuing inclusivity and diversity
In order for my future coachees to trust me, I must be willing to be held accountable to these high standards. Coaching is a huge responsibility, and I do not take this process of training lightly. I believe that integrity and excellence will follow a heart that is willing to be open for correction. As we receive feedback for our own performance, we must be willing to make adjustments so that we can move to another level of excellence.
As a future coach, I understand that I have a responsibility to my clients, to my practice and performance, to professionalism and society. I need to remove any form of bias that I may have developed unconsciously in my life towards others. What strikes me is that personal situations may arise in a coach’s life that will hinder the coaching relationship. When situations like these occur, the coach has the responsibility to ensure you yourself seek professional assistance in this area or if appropriate, to terminate the coaching relationship with your client.
Finally, confidentiality of the information entrusted to us as coaches is to be treated with utmost respect.
